Time for Design! With this rallying cry, the London Design Museum is summoning architects, designers and artists to a very special collective event. An auction in support of the new museum, still directed by Deyan Sudjic, which will open its doors on 24 November 2016. The London institution, founded by Sir Terence Conran in 1989, is relocating to premises offering three times its present exhibition spaces.
The ambition? To become the world’s Number 1 design museum. To help the museum achieve its dream – at a total cost of 83 million pounds – a rich benefit auction was organized from 28 April to 2 May.
Items donated by the great names of international design - Marc Newson, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and numerous others - include: Bono’s guitar, a special edition of iPad Pro and a gift from the Molteni Museum: a unique piece, the prototype of the Italian walnut desk, designed in 1989.
